Man Accused of Killing Roommate’s Fish
Saying goodbye is not so easy. But a Brooklyn, N.Y, man took it really hard.
Jose Santiago, 47, was accused of killing his roommate’s fish after she started packing to leave him.
Brenda Alvarez said she decided to leave their Nostrand Avenue apartment because she and Santiago have grown apart. Although they have known each other since they were children, she said she can no longer bear the growing tension between them.
“I started packing, but he kept antagonizing me,” Alvarez said. She said Santiago then attacked the two fish, named Bonnie and Clyde. He reportedly flushed one fish down the toilet and put the second one in a bag and tied it.
“When I saw him kill my fish I went berserk!” Alvarez recalled. “They were my babies! I can’t have children, so my pets are like my kids.”
Santiago was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and assault.
